$6000 - 4 Days, All Included
This 4-day Amazon birding program offers a well-rounded exploration of the eastern Ecuadorian lowlands, centered around the regions of Archidona, Tena, Misahuallí, and Arajuno. Over the course of the journey, birders experience a variety of habitats, including foothill forest, lowland rainforest, and riverine environments, each contributing to a rich and diverse species list.
Day 1: Foothill Forest Birding – Archidona
The journey begins in Archidona, located at the transition between the Andes and the Amazon. This area is ideal for birding due to its mix of foothill forest and secondary growth. Early morning birding focuses on forest edges and trails, where species such as tanagers, flycatchers, and mixed flocks are commonly encountered. The day offers a gentle introduction to Amazonian birdlife, with relatively accessible conditions and high activity. In the afternoon, birding continues at a slower pace, allowing time to become familiar with the sounds and movement patterns of the forest.
Day 2: Lowland Rainforest Exploration – Tena
The second day shifts deeper into the Amazon basin around Tena. Birding begins at dawn in primary and secondary forest habitats, where diversity increases significantly. This area is excellent for spotting toucans, parrots, and a variety of understory species such as antbirds and ovenbirds. Trails and quiet forest roads provide opportunities to follow mixed-species flocks. The afternoon session can include river-edge birding, where additional species are often active. This is a full and rewarding day with high species potential.
Day 3: Riverine Birding & Parrots – Misahuallí
On the third day, the focus moves to Misahuallí, a key location for riverine and canopy birding. Early morning activity along the riverbanks offers chances to observe parrots and parakeets in flight, as well as species associated with open and semi-open habitats. Boat-based birding can further enhance the experience, providing access to otherwise unreachable areas and increasing the likelihood of encountering kingfishers, herons, and other river specialists. The combination of water and forest habitats makes this day especially dynamic.
Day 4: Deep Forest Immersion – Arajuno
The final day takes place near Arajuno, where more intact lowland rainforest offers a deeper and more immersive birding experience. Early morning exploration focuses on interior forest species, often more secretive and specialized. This is an excellent opportunity to encounter species that are less common along roadsides or forest edges. The quieter, less disturbed environment provides a strong finish to the itinerary, with the potential for unique and memorable sightings before departure.
